Voor de 40e keer wordt “The Oddest Book Title of the Year” gekozen
26 oktober 2018 | Het literaire prijzencircus heeft gelukkig ook een aantal vrolijke nummers op het programma, zoals bijvoorbeeld de jaarlijkse Britse verkiezing van ‘The Bookseller’s Diagram Prize for the Oddest Book Title of the Year’. Deze prijs wordt dit jaar voor de 40e (!) keer uitgereikt.
The Bookseller/Diagram Prize for Oddest Book Title of the Year is a humorous literary award that is given annually to a book with an unusual title. Originally organised to provide entertainment during the 1978 Frankfurt Book Fair, the prize has since been awarded every year by The Bookseller. The winner was initially decided by a panel of judges, but since 2000 the winner has been decided by a public vote on The Bookseller′s website.
Op 26 oktober werden zes titels genomineerd, waarop het publiek zijn stem uit kan brengen via de website van The Bookseller (Engels vakblad voor de publishing industry).

- Are Gay Men More Accurate in Detecting Deceits?, by Hoe-Chi Angel Au of Open Dissertation Press.
- Call of Nature: The Secret Life of Dung, by Richard Jones of Pelagic Publishing.
- Equine Dry Needling, by Cornelia Klarholz and Andrea Schachinger of Tredition.
- Jesus on Gardening, by David Muskett of Onwards and Upwards.
- Joy of Waterboiling, by Asche Verlag.
- Why Sell Tacos in Africa?, by Paul Oberschneider of Blue Ocean Marketing.

De winnaar wordt bekendgemaakt op 23 november. De prijs?
There is no prize for the winning author or publisher, but traditionally a “passable bottle of claret” is given to the nominator of the winning entry. However, as all of the shortlisted titles were put forward by the in-house team, the claret will be given randomly to one member of the public who votes for the eventual winner.

UPDATE 24 nov. 2018 – And the winner is…
“I am delighted to announce that, for the first time in the 40-year life of the world’s most prestigious literary gong, a foreign-language tome, Joy of Waterboiling, has won the Diagram Prize for Oddest Book Title of the Year.
And JOW is a title that has absolutely romped to victory, garnering an astonishing 56% of votes cast—the biggest winning share since Cooking with Poo grabbed the (porcelain?) crown in 2014.”
